"For those who don't live with this reality, food allergy safety may seem as simple as not eating the wrong thing. But food allergy management involves far more than avoidance-it means navigating daily psychological impacts that most people never see. In honor of Food Allergy Awareness Week and Mental Health Awareness Month, here are four things the 33 million Americans living with food allergies need you to know."
"Think about how you'd feel navigating every meal knowing it requires placing trust in others to safely prepare your food. Now imagine doing that every single day. For many living with-or parenting a child with-food allergies, that's the emotional reality, and over time it takes a significant toll."
"62% reported food allergy-related psychological distress. Anxiety (54%) and panic (32%) were the most common emotions reported after eating a food that produced an allergic reaction. Specific anxieties include fear of fatal reactions, anxiety about accidental exposure, and loss of "normal life." Females reported significantly more types of distress than males."
"Mental health concerns are more prevalent among those managing multiple food allergies and those experiencing more than one reaction per year. Distress is widespread among those with food allergies-but mental health support rarely is."
Food allergy safety involves more than avoiding certain foods and includes daily psychological strain. Social events such as birthday parties and work dinners add hidden pressure because others must prepare food safely. Many people living with food allergies experience food allergy-related psychological distress, including anxiety and panic after allergic reactions. Common fears include fatal reactions, accidental exposure, and losing a normal life. Distress is more frequent among females, people managing multiple food allergies, and those who have more than one reaction per year. Mental health support is often not available at the level needed to address these burdens.
