A second sloth dies after transfer to a central Florida zoo from troubled Sloth World
"Habanero initially showed encouraging signs of stabilization, including eating and drinking regularly under the close supervision of the zoo's veterinary and animal care teams. In recent days, however, his condition worsened."
"Inspection reports by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission revealed 31 deaths between December 2024 and February 2025, with sloths unable to regulate their body temperature effectively."
Habanero, an adult male sloth, was euthanized at the Central Florida Zoo after being taken for rehabilitation along with other sloths from Sloth World. Another sloth, Bandit, died shortly after arrival. All sloths were underweight and suffering from gastrointestinal issues. A criminal investigation is ongoing regarding the treatment of sloths at Sloth World, where 31 sloth deaths were reported. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission noted that sloths are sensitive to temperature changes, which contributed to the deaths.
