"BERLIN - The European Union was set to present its 19th sanctions package against Russia on Wednesday, tightening its economic vise as President Vladimir Putin refuses to halt his war in Ukraine. Then, Donald Trump weighed in. "I am ready to do major sanctions on Russia when all NATO Nations have agreed, and started, to do the same thing, and when all NATO Nations STOP BUYING OIL FROM RUSSIA," Trump wrote over the weekend on Truth Social, the social media platform he owns."
"On Tuesday, a day ahead of the expected sanctions rollout, E.U. officials and diplomats said the package would be delayed. Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission - the bloc's executive arm - posted Tuesday evening on X that she had spoken with Trump and that the commission would present the sanctions package soon, targeting banks, energy and the cryptocurrency industry."
"While the E.U. is eager to coordinate with Washington, Trump's demands have effectively stalled any new pressure on Moscow. Some supporters of Ukraine have noted that Trump has taken no action against Russia since his August meeting with Putin in Alaska failed to achieve a ceasefire, and instead Putin has only stepped up attacks and adopted an even bolder stance."
The European Union prepared a 19th sanctions package tightening economic measures as Russia continues its war in Ukraine. Donald Trump said he would agree to major sanctions only after all NATO members commit and stop buying Russian oil. The proposed E.U. package was delayed while Ursula von der Leyen said she had spoken with Trump and promised measures targeting banks, energy and the cryptocurrency industry. Von der Leyen called for speeding up the phaseout of Russian fossil imports. Trump's conditions have slowed coordinated pressure, while Hungary and Slovakia continue substantial Russian oil purchases and their leaders back Trump.
