iOS 26.5 Brings Default End-to-End Encrypted RCS Messaging Between iPhone and Android
""This welcome progress is the result of close, cross‑industry collaboration between the GSMA RCS Working Group, including Apple, Google, and the wider mobile ecosystem," Alex Sinclair, chief technology officer at GSMA, said. "Crucially, the new secure services are being delivered on an open, globally recognised foundation.""
Apple released iOS 26.5 with beta support for end-to-end encryption (E2EE) in Rich Communication Services (RCS). E2EE RCS messaging is rolling out to iPhone users on iOS 26.5 with supported carriers and to Android users on the latest Google Messages. The feature is enabled by default for new and existing conversations on both platforms. RCS is an internet-based messaging protocol that supports high-resolution photos and videos, typing indicators, and read receipts, based on the RCS Universal Profile. Apple states that E2EE prevents messages from being read while sent between devices and adds a lock icon to indicate encryption. Google Messages uses a padlock icon for cross-platform encrypted conversations. GSMA support enabled the rollout through cross-industry collaboration on an open foundation.
