Lizzo sued for copyright infringement over unreleased song
"GRC Trust is suing the 37-year-old Grammy winner, real name Melissa Viviane Jefferson, and label, Atlantic Records, over claims Lizzo replicated portions of Win or Lose (We Tried) in I'm Goin' In Till October without forking over the money for a license to do so, according to the filing obtained by TMZ. The alleged untoward usage of the track comes after GRC Trust says Lizzo and co. previously tried and failed to negotiate the rights to sample it."
"A representative for Atlantic told the Daily News the company is surprised that The GRC Trust filed this lawsuit. To be clear, the song has never been commercially released or monetized, and no decision has been made at this time regarding any future commercial release of the song, continued the statement. In 2022, Lizzo settled a 2019 copyright infringement suit over Truth Hurts, which ended with her affording a songwriting credit to fellow musician Mina Lioness."
GRC Trust filed suit against Lizzo (Melissa Viviane Jefferson) and Atlantic Records, alleging unauthorized replication of portions of Win or Lose (We Tried) in I'm Goin' In Till October without a license. GRC Trust claims prior attempts to negotiate sampling rights failed and seeks damages plus an injunction to block exploitation of its song. I'm Goin' In Till October has not been commercially released but circulated on social media in August when Lizzo parodied controversy around a Sydney Sweeney American Eagle ad. Atlantic said it was surprised by the filing and noted the song has not been monetized or approved for release. Previous disputes include a 2022 Truth Hurts settlement and a 2019 claim regarding Juice.
