"It has been incredible to work for Seva after all these years, Wavy Gravy told Berkeleyside via a recorded video. From the beginning of the founding of the organization until this very moment, we have restored sight to millions of people throughout the planet."
Wavy Gravy is a long-time Berkeley figure known for roles across American counterculture, including emceeing Woodstock, associating with major artists and thinkers, and participating in prankster and activist efforts. He introduced granola to hippies at Woodstock and ran a pig for president against Richard Nixon, while also seeking local office with promises of playful civic improvements. He co-founded communes and camps and became linked to large-scale humanitarian work through Seva. Seva, founded with Dr. Larry Brilliant, Ram Dass, and others, has provided sight-saving surgeries and eye care to tens of millions of people worldwide. He is being honored with a 90th birthday party and benefit concert in San Francisco to support Seva.
