"In a pilot with 50 cars equipped with intelligent speed assistance, or ISA, officials say drivers stuck to posted limits 99 percent of the time and sharply cut back on hard braking. The Department of Citywide Administrative Services has now applied for federal grants to extend the technology to about 7,500 municipal vehicles over the next three to four years."
"During that stretch, the cars reportedly stayed within the speed limit 99 percent of the time, and hard-braking events dropped 36 percent, which the administration points to as evidence that the system reins in risky driving, according to the Mayor's Office."
"Each test vehicle came with an override button that lets a driver temporarily push past the capped speed for 15 seconds. DCAS reports it was pressed about 600 times during the trial, mostly early on while operators were still getting used to the new setup."
New York City tested intelligent speed assistance (ISA) technology on 50 government vehicles from August 2022 onward, with results showing drivers maintained posted speed limits 99 percent of the time and reduced hard-braking incidents by 36 percent. The pilot vehicles accumulated over 133,400 miles while equipped with override buttons allowing temporary 15-second speed limit bypasses, pressed approximately 600 times mostly during initial adjustment periods. The system functioned across light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles without disrupting regular city services. The Department of Citywide Administrative Services has applied for federal grants to deploy this technology to approximately 7,500 municipal vehicles over three to four years, potentially representing one of the largest coordinated ISA deployments globally. The city plans to collaborate with the U.S. Department of Transportation's Volpe Center for comprehensive pilot evaluation.
