New York Jets legend Nick Mangold dies aged 41 while seeking kidney transplant
"This isn't an easy message to share, but I want to be open about what's been happening with me and my health, Mangold said at the time."
"Nick was more than a legendary center, Jets owner Woody Johnson said in a statement. He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football. Off the field, Nick's wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family."
Nick Mangold died at 41 after seeking a kidney transplant and undergoing dialysis for a genetic condition that led to kidney disease. He discovered no family members matched his blood type, prompting appeals to Jets and Ohio State fans for donors. Mangold was a first-round pick out of Ohio State by the New York Jets in 2006 and spent his entire 11-season NFL career with the team, retiring in 2016. He earned seven Pro Bowl selections, anchored an offensive line that reached two AFC Championship games, missed only four games in his first 10 seasons, and was a Pro Football Hall of Fame nominee. Off the field he was known for long hair, a beard, an outgoing personality, remained active with the Jets including a Ring of Honor induction in 2022, coached at Delbarton High School, and was married with four children.
