Quinn Ewers supplants Zach Wilson as Dolphins backup QB before Browns game
"CLEVELAND - Miami Dolphins rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers has supplanted Zach Wilson as the team's backup to starter Tua Tagovailoa. Ewers was a seventh-round draft pick of the Dolphins out of Texas in April. He was the third-string quarterback through the offseason, preseason and first six weeks of the regular season. In the preseason, he seemed to outperform Wilson on the field, but it also came against lesser opposing defensive units."
"Wilson was the No. 2 pick of the 2021 draft by the New York Jets, but had a failed tenure there to start his career, in which the Jets signed Aaron Rodgers to take over for him. Wilson was the Denver Broncos' third-string quarterback in 2024 and never played. The Dolphins were convicted in the offseason decision to sign Wilson in free agency as Tagovailoa's backup over a more experienced, proven veteran."
Quinn Ewers was elevated to backup quarterback behind starter Tua Tagovailoa for the Miami Dolphins' Week 7 game at Cleveland, replacing Zach Wilson, who was listed as a healthy inactive and available only as an emergency third quarterback. Ewers was a seventh-round draft pick out of Texas and spent the offseason, preseason and first six regular-season weeks as the third-string quarterback, showing stronger preseason play against lighter competition. Wilson, the No. 2 pick in 2021, struggled early in New York, served as Denver's third-string in 2024 without appearing, and had limited action this season. Miami elevated outside linebacker Quinton Bell from the practice squad after surprising healthy inactive designation for edge defender Matthew Judon, who had six tackles in six games.
