Seattle Kraken's three-goalie rotation prompts more questions than answers after beatdown by Washington Capitals: 'I don't know how long you can go with this'
"Sometimes the quantity [of reps] that we receive in training camp creates some reps that are fatigue reps. You can pick up bad habits in that environment,"
"They're leaving the day feeling accomplished and tired enough, but not too tired."
"I mean, I don't like it. Let's just call it what it is, I don't like it,"
"I understand the process [GM] Jason Botterill and his staff thought this thing through, and [for head] coach [Lane] Lambert it's not easy, too, because when you have an extra goaltender, you're short"
The Seattle Kraken are running a three-man goaltending rotation with Joey Daccord, Philip Grubauer, and Matt Murray intended to limit practice "fatigue reps" and preserve game energy. The coaching rationale is that fewer practice reps reduce the chance of picking up bad habits and keep goalies accomplished and energized rather than overly tired. Early usage has been uneven: Daccord started five of the first seven games while Grubauer and Murray each started once. The strategy has drawn public criticism as potentially unsustainable. In one game Murray stopped 30 of 33 shots and allowed three goals in about 58 minutes.
