New campaign encourages families to adopt large dogs in Toronto | CBC News
"These dogs have so much love to give. And I think if you give them a chance, it could change your life. Large dogs sit in shelters for at least one-and-a-half to two times longer than any of the other animals in our shelters through no fault of their own."
"We have lots of couch potatoes that are very happy to go for a walk and live in a smaller space. Every single dog has its own back story, and the only way to really know is to come in and meet them and understand which is the best fit for you."
Toronto Animal Services has partnered with NutriCanine, a fresh dog food company, to run their second annual campaign promoting large dog adoption in the Greater Toronto Area from March 23 to April 23. The campaign waives all adoption fees for dogs over 50 pounds and large-breed puppies to encourage families to consider adopting bigger dogs. Large dogs are often overlooked despite being loyal, affectionate, and sweet companions. According to the agency, large dogs remain in shelters 1.5 to 2 times longer than other animals due to misconceptions about space requirements and exercise needs. The previous year's campaign resulted in 58 adoptions. Toronto Animal Services emphasizes that big dogs thrive in various living situations and many are content in smaller spaces.
