Happy died after nearly 50 years in Bronx Zoo care and was euthanized at age 55. The zoo cited weeks of worsening age-related conditions and signs of possible declining liver or kidney function. The median lifespan for Asian elephants in U.S. zoos is 45 years. Happy became nationally known in 2018 during an animal rights case and in 2005 when she recognized herself in a mirror. Patty, age 57, remains active and is being closely monitored, while WCS may move her once only one elephant is left, based on veterinarians and animal care experts.
"The zoo said the decision came after weeks of declining age-related conditions and signs of potential declining liver or kidney function."
