"George Gallego has never accepted limits. The American paratriathlete and entrepreneur turned his accident that left him paralyzed into a lifelong mission to empower others. He is the founder of the Axis Project, a fitness community space he built with his own hands. Now, as the space prepares to close its doors on Oct. 31, he is racing to secure funding for a new location and keep his mission alive."
"This year, Gallego's determination found a new stage as part of Team Inspire in the TCS New York Marathon produced by nonprofit New York Road Runners. This organization produces 60 adults and youth races annually. Team Inspire, which includes George Gallego and other 25 athletes with compelling stories, showcases the marathon commitment to accessibility and community. This interview has been condensed for clarity and understanding."
"I can use leg braces and crutches, but I'm basically walking with my upper body when I use those. For the first 10 years or so, I call it my dark period because it took me quite some time to get through to the point where I can actually embrace and love myself and my disability and my new way of life."
George Gallego transformed a work-related spinal cord injury into a lifelong mission to empower others through adaptive fitness. He founded and physically built the Axis Project as a community fitness space for people with disabilities. The Axis Project faces closure on Oct. 31, and Gallego is urgently seeking funding to secure a new location and preserve community programming. Gallego competes as an American paratriathlete and joined Team Inspire for the TCS New York Marathon to represent accessibility and inclusion. He describes a prolonged recovery and credits his children with motivating him to embrace his disability and rebuild his life.
