"We have tried many times to see if we can actually have a place where we can belong, we can be ourselves. And being in this physical space, it gives us that rooting."
"That's a really big thing - and making sure that our community knows that there are services out there for us. Not just doom and gloom."
"first & only Kinnar Hijrah led and empowering organization centering Indian South Asian and Global South transgender, gender-diverse, and intersex (TGNCI) immigrants and asylees"
Parivar Bay Area opened a brick-and-mortar center in San Francisco on October 20 during Diwali. Founder Anjali Rimi described strong gratitude and said the physical space provides belonging and rooting for community members. The center will offer legal advice, leadership training, and other supports for transgender immigrants facing intersectional attacks under the current administration. Director of strategy Phanny Lun emphasized the importance of community and accessible services to counter media narratives of isolation and hopelessness. The center focuses on South Asian and Southeast Asian trans immigrants while remaining open to immigrants from any country. The website frames the center as a Kinnar Hijrah-led organization centering Indian South Asian and Global South TGNCI immigrants and asylees.
