Mission Buzz: Sayonara to French-inspired bakery. Bienvenue to homemade onigiri and bento boxes
"Owner Emily Tung expressed her motivation for opening Konbini, stating, 'I did it because if I ever needed to go get Asian snacks or Asian ingredients, I'd either have to go all the way to Japantown or drive over to H-Mart.' This reflects her desire to meet local demand for accessible Asian food."
"Tung shared her journey into making onigiri, saying, 'I was like, 'well, I have all these like rice cookers, and there isn't really great onigiri around. I should just make my own.' This highlights her transition from consumer to producer in the food industry."
Konbini, a pop-up specializing in onigiri, has opened a permanent location at 2790 Harrison St. The shop offers homemade onigiri, bento boxes, and Asian-inspired snacks and drinks. Owner Emily Tung aimed to provide convenient access to Asian snacks, as she found it challenging to source them locally. Despite her long-time enjoyment of onigiri, she is relatively new to making it. Konbini operates on a limited schedule, open Tuesday through Saturday, catering to the community's needs for ready-to-eat Asian food.
