Sunset residents ask: Dude, where's my community room?
""Playland at 43rd Avenue,""
""community room""
""We do not currently have an operator and lessee of this space, so the space isn't up and running for reservation,""
A 135-unit affordable housing complex in the Outer Sunset, Shirley Chisholm Village at 1360 43rd Ave, opened in early September to house San Francisco teachers and school staff. The project replaced a former park and parking lot known as "Playland at 43rd Avenue," which hosted a playground, a skatepark and a community garden from 2016 to 2022. Residents insisted on a dedicated 750-square-foot community room accessible to the public for events, meetings and town halls. MidPen Housing pledged public access but now says the room cannot be reserved because it lacks a full-time operator and lessee to steward the space, leaving neighborhood groups unable to book meetings in May and June.
