"Behind Harry Kane he is the most in-form England striker. He's given himself a chance."
"I'm not saying he would go and accept being on the bench, but Ollie Watkins and players like that who are trying to get in the squad, they are still young enough and want to be pushing Kane for that starting place," said Rooney of his former Manchester United team-mate."

Danny Welbeck has scored six goals in 10 Premier League games for Brighton and is the top-scoring Englishman this season. A recall to the England squad is being suggested while Harry Kane could be rested ahead of the World Cup qualifiers. Welbeck has 42 caps and last played for England in 2018; he will be 35 by next summer's tournament. Oliver Watkins and Ivan Toney are currently out of form or unavailable. Welbeck offers experience, work-rate, and the capacity to come on and make an impact, aligning with a manager preference for squad cohesion.
