eBay gloves, cursing pitchers and unhittable splits: The magic chemistry of the Blue Jays
"Mine was getting worn, so this one looked good on eBay, so bought it, I have to wear a glove underneath my glove because this glove is so old, it has no padding in it. We got three pitches per at-bat. My dad would say, 'You'd better swing.' I've heard that. So have I. I'll have to meet him someday and tell him that this [his face] is what he has to look forward to someday."
"He would have pitched nine innings if I would've let him,"
During 15 days in October with the American League champion Toronto Blue Jays, infielders and relievers displayed versatility and relentlessness. Ernie Clement uses an old glove bought on eBay and must wear another glove underneath because the glove lacks padding. Clement is an AL Gold Glove finalist at third base and as a utility player and excels defensively, making quick transfers and strong on-the-run throws. He has 18 hits and two strikeouts in 42 postseason at-bats and credits an aggressive early batting routine from Coach Pitch. Reliever Louis Varland would pitch daily, appeared in 10 of 11 postseason games and even opened a Division Series game a day after relief; manager John Schneider said Varland would have thrown nine innings if allowed.
