How the latest Alex Bregman rumors could affect the Blue Jays
"At some point this offseason the major dominos will begin to fall. Big name players remain on the free agent market almost two months into the offseason. Baseball's offseason has always been slow moving, but some times it just takes a spark to really get the wheels in motion and one of those sparks could be the latest rumor involving an infielder the Toronto Blue Jays have previously been interested in."
"Bregman, who will be 32-years-old when next season begins, opted out of the final two years of a $120 million contract with the Red Sox, leaving $80 million on the table. It still remains to be seen if he'll actually get that kind of money again, from the Diamondbacks or anyone else, but if it is Arizona willing to pony up, they'll have to shed salary elsewhere. One area they can do that is by trading their current most expensive non-pitcher, Ketel Marte."
The Arizona Diamondbacks are reportedly pursuing Alex Bregman, who opted out of the final two years of a $120 million Red Sox contract and left $80 million on the table. Arizona would need to create financial space for Bregman, which could require a lateral move or trading salary. Trading Ketel Marte, the Diamondbacks' most expensive non-pitcher, is a plausible payroll-clearing option. Removing Bregman from the AL East would reduce a strong division opponent for the Toronto Blue Jays. Bregman is a Gold Glove winner, a consistent 20+ home run threat with a high OPS, and has strong numbers against Toronto.
