AI chatbots could help stop prisoner release errors, says justice minister
"David Lammy, the lord chancellor, is expected to address parliament about the number of missing prisoners when MPs return on Tuesday. It is understood that AI could be used to read and process paper documents; help staff cross-reference names to ensure that inmates are no longer hiding their past crimes behind aliases; merge different datasets; and calculate release dates and sentences. At present, many of these jobs are being completed by inexperienced staff using calculators and reams of paper."
"In HMP Gartree, they average two releases a year, whereas in Wandsworth it is 2,000. But that is why the digital team last week went into HMP Wandsworth to look at what are the opportunities for some quick fixes to embrace digital technology. We had the AI team that went in and, to give you a couple of examples, they think an AI chatbot would be really helpful, and also a cross-referencing for aliases, because we know some offenders have more than 20 aliases."
HMP Wandsworth has been authorised to trial AI tools after a specialised digital team identified quick fixes to prevent release errors. Two inmates were incorrectly released, prompting a double manhunt and political criticism of prison procedures. AI capabilities proposed include reading and processing paper documents, cross-referencing aliases, merging datasets, and calculating release dates and sentences. Many of these tasks are currently performed by inexperienced staff using calculators and paper records. The digital team recommended an AI chatbot and alias cross-referencing because some offenders use more than 20 aliases. The team has been given the green light to proceed.
