ACC shifts to bigger conference slate, delaying Stanford-San Jose State matchup
"The Atlantic Coast Conference's transition to a nine-game football schedule will feature 12 of 17 football-playing members playing nine games next fall while the remaining five stay at eight. The league announced details of the new model Tuesday, including the league matchups for each school. Next year will operate as a bridge to accommodate conference games already on the books, with the plan to have 16 of 17 teams playing nine football games regularly by 2027."
"Reigning champion Duke will join Cal, Stanford and nine others in playing nine league games for the 2026 season. Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech and North Carolina will play eight. Cal will play Clemson, Pitt, Stanford, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest at home and face NC State, SMU, Syracuse, Virginia on the road. Stanford will host Georgia Tech, Miami, NC State and SMU, and visit California, Duke, Louisville, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest."
"Stanford's move to nine conference games necessitated moving a game off next year's slate, so the Cardinal rescheduled the Bill Walsh Legacy Game to 2031. San Jose State will now seek a new nonconference opponent for 2026 in addition to home dates with Cal Poly and Fresno State, as well as a road game at Eastern Michigan. The Stanford-SJSU game was already scheduled for four more iterations, in 2028 and 2034-2036."
The ACC will implement a nine-game conference schedule in a phased transition. Twelve of 17 football-playing members will play nine league games in 2026, while five will remain at eight. The 2026 season operates as a bridge to accommodate existing nonconference contracts, with the goal of 16 of 17 teams playing nine conference games regularly by 2027. Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech and North Carolina will play eight under the 2026 plan. Schedule adjustments forced Stanford to reschedule the Bill Walsh Legacy Game to 2031 and left San Jose State seeking a new 2026 opponent. The model establishes a 9+1 baseline against Power Four opponents.
