Nick Mangold, popular All-Pro Jets center, dies from kidney disease
""Nick was more than a legendary center," said Jets Chairman Woody Johnson in a prepared statement. "He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football. Off the field, Nick's wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family.""
""In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease," Mangold wrote in his letter addressed to "My NY Jets community.""
""I'm undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant. I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have more time.""
Nick Mangold died Saturday night at age 41 from complications of kidney disease. The New York Jets announced his death on Sunday morning. Jets Chairman Woody Johnson described Mangold as the heartbeat of the offensive line and praised his leadership, toughness, wit, warmth, and loyalty. Mangold disclosed a 2006 genetic defect that led to chronic kidney disease, endured a rough summer, and began dialysis while seeking a kidney transplant. Mangold was a 2006 first-round pick from Ohio State, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection, and a 2022 Jets ring of honor inductee. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer, and four children.
