Shots fired after lone vehicle speeds at Coast Guard Island gate amid protests
"Coast Guard security personnel then fire multiple shots at the U-Haul, which tries to drive away. "Coast Guard personnel issued multiple verbal commands to stop the vehicle, the driver failed to comply and proceeded to put the vehicle in reverse - suddenly accelerating backwards at a high rate of speed directly toward them," Coast Guard Lt. Krystal Wolfe said in an emailed statement."
""When the vehicle's actions posed a direct threat to the safety of Coast Guard and security personnel, law enforcement officers discharged several rounds of defensive live fire." Wolfe said two people were injured, including the driver, who was wounded in the stomach. Another bystander, injured by a fragment, was taken to a hospital and released. The driver is being "held for a mental health evaluation" and agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation are now on the scene looking into the shooting."
A U-Haul attempted to enter the bridge to Coast Guard Island and then reversed suddenly toward armed Coast Guard personnel, prompting security to fire multiple rounds. Coast Guard personnel issued verbal commands that the driver did not follow before the vehicle accelerated backward at high speed toward the officers. Two people were injured: the driver suffered a stomach wound and another bystander was struck by a fragment and later released from the hospital. The driver is being held for a mental health evaluation. FBI agents have arrived to investigate. Protests in the Bay Area that day had been largely peaceful.
