"The next phase centers on ATF labs and testing facilities, where investigators will try to determine what triggered the explosion, said Jamey VanVliet, ATF special agent in charge in the Nashville division. "Those results don't come quickly," VanVliet said. "They come through time, care, and precision. And that's what this community deserves: answers that are proven, not guessed." From 24,000 to 28,000 pounds of explosives detonated that day, authorities said."
A massive blast at Accurate Energetic Systems in Bucksnort, Tennessee, on Oct. 10 killed 16 people and destroyed the 15,000-square-foot plant. The explosion detonated between 24,000 and 28,000 pounds of explosives and began on the first floor near kettles used to produce an explosive mixture for the commercial mining industry. The facility primarily made cast boosters, typically mixtures of TNT and RDX poured by hand into cardboard tubes. On-site work located victims' remains and removed unexploded explosives. ATF laboratories will perform forensic testing to determine the cause, a process expected to take months. Two victims remain unidentified.
