Hakeem Jeffries accused President Donald Trump and Republicans of threatening to cut off SNAP benefits for 42 million Americans, including 16 million children, 8 million seniors and over a million veterans, if emergency funds are not used during the government shutdown. The White House and Republicans contend using contingency funds for SNAP would be unlawful, and Federal Judge Indira Talwani will rule on whether to compel the administration to continue benefits. Jeffries said more than $5 billion exists in an emergency fund that could extend benefits through the end of November and called using hunger as a bargaining chip unacceptable.
