"New York, Los Angeles and Chicago airports are among 40 that will see reductions in flights from Friday as a result of the government shutdown, according to a list distributed to the airlines. The Associated Press published the list after airline regulators identified high-volume markets where air traffic will be reduced on Friday, a move that would force airlines to cancel thousands of flights and create a cascade of scheduling issues and delays at some of the nation's largest airports."
"The Federal Administration Agency has said flights are being reduced to maintain safety during the ongoing federal government shutdown, now the longest recorded and with no sign of a resolution between Republicans and Democrats to end the federal budget standoff, now in its 37th day. Experts predict hundreds if not thousands of flights could be canceled. The cuts could represent as many as 1,800 flights and upwards of 268,000 seats combined, according to an estimate by the aviation analytics firm Cirium."
Forty U.S. airports, including major hubs such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Denver, Dallas, Orlando, Miami, and San Francisco, will see flight reductions starting Friday. Reductions apply to flights scheduled between 6am and 10pm and will begin at about 4%, rising to as much as 10%. The cuts could force airlines to cancel up to 1,800 flights and eliminate roughly 268,000 seats, creating scheduling cascades and delays. Air traffic controllers have been working unpaid since October 1, with many on mandatory overtime or holding second jobs. The timing, two weeks before Thanksgiving, increases pressure to resolve the shutdown.
