'Protection, not deportation': Miami Haitian leaders call for reversal of TPS decision
Briefly

Community leaders in Miami-Dade and Broward are advocating for the restoration of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians following its termination by the Trump administration. During a press conference, they expressed the urgent need for a meeting with President Trump. They articulated that the Haitian community significantly contributes to the local economy and highlighted the ongoing crisis in Haiti. Activists are also seeking to extend Deferred Enforced Departure protection. Concerns from residents have surged, with many feeling depressed and uncertain about their futures in the U.S.
"People are depressed," she said. Bastien said that some of the people affected by the TPS decision have been living in the United States for 50 years. "You've built your life here. You have a job, your businesses, your homes..."
Councilwoman Mary Estimé-Irvin called the administration's decision "outright unjust." She hopes the meeting with the president will help him understand how the Haitian community's contribution to South Florida has been "inmeasurable."
The leaders and activists hosted a press conference organized by the National Haitian American Elected Officials Network, calling for the Trump administration to not only reverse the TPS decision but also extend Deferred Enforced Departure to Haitians.
