The Pentagon is experimenting with a secure, cloud-based network on the British aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales. This initiative, termed mission network-as-a-service, aims at reducing the complexity of military communication networks. Leslie Beavers, the Pentagon's principal deputy CIO, emphasized the need for interoperability with allies and partners. The prototype leverages zero trust principles and omits traditional cross-domain solutions, marking a significant shift in how the military will secure its communications with international partners.
"If we actually get to the point where we tag the people, tag the data and know what's happening, then having a separate [unclassified network] and [secret classified network] is not the way we would need to secure our network."
"We've been working really hard with our allies and partners to get after that interoperability piece, because at the end of the day....that's where the biggest challenges [are] within the department."
