Silicon Valley military families may lose their low-cost grocer - San Jose Spotlight
"The commissary at Moffett Federal Airfield in Mountain View has long served as a grocery lifeline for military families in the Bay Area. But Congressman Sam Liccardo is ringing alarm bells about reports the federal government may cease the facility's operations in 2026 - leaving the next closest commissary 75 miles away. The San Jose lawmaker voiced his concerns in a Thursday letter to John Hall, director of the Defense Commissary Agency headquartered in Fort Lee, Virginia."
"Our service members and veterans have made enormous sacrifices to protect our nation. The least we can do is ensure they have access to affordable, basic necessities," Liccardo said in a statement from a letter he shared with reporters. "Losing the Moffett Field Commissary would be a hardship for the Bay Area's military community, and I urge the Defense Commissary Agency to preserve or replace it."
Moffett Federal Airfield's commissary provides the only discounted grocery and household shopping option for military members and families in Santa Clara County. Federal plans may close the facility in 2026, which would force Bay Area service families to travel about 75 miles to the next commissary. Congressman Sam Liccardo sent a letter to John Hall of the Defense Commissary Agency urging reversal and an economic-impact assessment for thousands of military families. The Defense Commissary Agency deferred comment to the Department of War, which did not respond. The Department has studied privatizing commissaries and the NASA Ames Research Center owns the commissary building.
