Trump Deploys 300 Members of California National Guard to Portland, Governor Newsom to Sue
"The commander-in-chief is using the U.S. military as a political weapon against American citizens. We will take this fight to court, but the public cannot stay silent in the face of such reckless and authoritarian conduct by the President of the United States, Newsom said in the statement."
"These incidents are inexcusable, but they are nowhere near the type of incidents that cannot be handled by regular law enforcement forces. This historical tradition boils down to a simple proposition: this is a nation of Constitutional law, not martial law, Immergut wrote in the order."
California Governor Gavin Newsom announced a lawsuit against President Trump for federalizing the California National Guard to protect federal property in Portland amid nightly protests at an ICE facility. Newsom said 300 Guard members were en route to Portland under presidential orders and characterized the deployment as an abuse of law and power and as using the military as a political weapon. An Oregon federal judge temporarily blocked deployment of the Oregon National Guard, finding protests were not sufficiently violent or disruptive to warrant troop deployment and warning against blurring civil and military authority.
