"I have given them approval to build a Nuclear Powered Submarine, rather than the old fashioned, and far less nimble, diesel powered Submarines that they have now, Trump said on Truth Social Thursday. In a separate post, Trump wrote: South Korea will be building its Nuclear Powered Submarine in the Philadelphia Shipyards, right here in the good ol' U.S.A. Shipbuilding in our Country will soon be making a BIG COMEBACK, he added."
"While South Korea has a sophisticated shipbuilding industry, Trump did not spell out where the propulsion technology would come from for a nuclear-powered submarine. The US has been working with Australia and Britain on the Aukus project, which will allow Australia to acquire nuclear-powered submarines involving technology transfers from the United States. The US has so far only shared that technology with Britain, back in the 1950s."
US president Donald Trump gave approval for South Korea to build a nuclear-powered submarine, admitting Seoul to a small group of nations with such vessels. Trump met South Korean president Lee Jae Myung in Gyeongju ahead of the Apec summit and the two countries agreed on a broad deal covering investment and shipbuilding. Trump said construction would occur at the Philadelphia Shipyards in the United States. The source of propulsion technology and fuel remains unspecified, and the US has previously only shared such technology with Britain; Aukus involves transfers to Australia. Lee emphasized the submarines would not carry nuclear weapons and cited superior submerged endurance compared with diesel boats for tracking regional submarines.
