"This [reduction in force] puts all of those services at stake."
"evaluate what federal responsibilities are truly critical for the American people."
"Two weeks in, millions of American students are still going to school, teachers are getting paid and schools are operating as normal. It confirms what the president has said: the federal Department of Education is unnecessary,"
Education Secretary Linda McMahon has reduced staffing in the Office of Postsecondary Education's Student Services division from about 40 to two or three, pausing layoffs temporarily after a federal judge's order. The cuts hinder connections between TRIO grant recipients, college-preparation program leaders, and the department, threatening supports for thousands of low-income and first-generation prospective and enrolled students. The administration previously sought to defund TRIO and canceled dozens of TRIO grants. McMahon framed the government shutdown and reduction in force as an opportunity to evaluate critical federal responsibilities and suggested the Department of Education is unnecessary.
