Fifth annual Japan Parade shines despite rain on the Upper West Side | amNewYork
"This parade is focused on two things, one that show the unity of Japanese community in New York, and also it demonstrates the strong relation between Japan and the United States, Katahira told amNewYork. Japan Parade is not only Japanese community event, this is an event for all New Yorkers. This has become a signature event."
The fifth annual Japan Parade began on Saturday on the Upper West Side, with Soh Daiko drummers filling the streets. Hundreds gathered despite encroaching rain clouds to celebrate enduring friendship between Japan and New York City. The parade started at West 81st Street and Central Park West, then moved down to West 70th Street, where marchers stepped onto a red carpet for a showcase of Japanese culture, tradition, and community pride. Taiko drums, cheers, Japanese and American flags, dancers in kimonos and happi coats, cosplay, and demonstrations of samurai swordsmanship and judo created a festive atmosphere. A daylong Japan Street Fair offered food, games, and cultural activities, with performances and appearances from multiple groups and performers.
