"The underlying numbers are there. The film's there. We're doing a lot of good things. I think there's some things that we could do a little bit better job of while we work ourselves through a little bit of guys not finishing at a high rate. I think that's probably the biggest difference right now."
"We're not finishing at a high rate, so what does that mean? That means when we get in on a two-on-one or a breakaway right now, last year those were going in the net a lot for a lot of different guys. For the first ten games (this season), it hasn't gone in a lot for a lot of guys. Okay, no problem. You can still win games and still score goals without finishing at a high rate"
The Capitals scored 27 goals in their first 10 games, ranking 26th in average goals per game and 17 goals fewer than at the same point last season. Head coach Spencer Carbery reviewed offensive analytics and game film and found the team is generating valuable chances and executing many structural processes correctly. The main shortfall is a low finishing rate on high-value chances, including two-on-ones and breakaways that converted more often last season. Carbery also examined zone-time figures and determined zone time is not a strong suit for some lines but is less of a concern than the inability to finish.
