"While most GOP lawmakers have remained quiet on the proposal as they spent their recess out of Washington, some have publicly questioned whether they would support it. "I'm going to look at it very carefully and make sure those things are in the national interest," said Rep. Rob Wittman, a Virginia Republican who was in the Capitol last week to briefly gavel in a pro forma session of the House."
Senate Republicans returning to Washington face questions about a $1 billion security proposal intended to help pay for President Donald Trump’s ballroom. The money was added to a spending bill that would restore funding for immigration enforcement agencies that Democrats have blocked since February. The proposal followed a charge against a man accused of trying to assassinate Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. Republicans plan to use a partisan budget maneuver to move the legislation without Democratic support. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said Democrats will oppose it by seeking action from the Senate parliamentarian and by offering amendments that require Republican votes. Support among Republicans is uncertain, and the House bill has not been released yet.
