"Fighting has intensified in Sudan's besieged city of el-Fasher in North Darfur, as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group claimed it had captured a government-aligned Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) base seen as their last stronghold in the western region. The takeover of the base, which is known as the Six Infantry Division belonging to the Sudanese army, came after days of heavy fighting, said Al Jazeera's Hiba Morgan, reporting from the capital Khartoum on Sunday."
"What we understand from military sources is that despite the fact that the RSF has taken over the army division there, the forces themselves were not present inside the base itself, said Morgan. They had withdrawn and rebased themselves around the city, so technically, while the RSF does control the infantry division that used to belong to the Sudanese army there, it does not have full control of the city of el-Fasher itself."
The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) claimed capture of the Six Infantry Division, a Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) base near el-Fasher, after days of heavy fighting. RSF forces have besieged el-Fasher for 18 months while clashing with the Sudanese army, allied former rebels and local fighters. The siege has included frequent drone and artillery strikes on civilians, causing acute suffering and spreading starvation among roughly 250,000 people remaining under fire. SAF forces experienced difficulty resupplying and reinforcing the base and repositioned around the city. RSF control of the base does not equal full control of el-Fasher, and a complete takeover could consolidate RSF authority in Darfur and accelerate a physical split of the country.
