Bay Area Hanukkah celebrations begin as community mourns those lost in Australia shooting
"The main objective of tonight's event: The importance of unity, the importance of lighting the menorah, which represents the victory over light over darkness -- even we have some much darkness around us,"
"I'm here this evening in solidarity with our Jewish community here and around the world,"
"He said when he heard about it, he was shocked. He couldn't believe it happened about a mile from where he lives,"
"We know this exists and we know we will continue and keep continuing just like we have since the beginning,"
Bay Area Jewish communities held menorah lightings with a somber tone following the deadly attack on the Jewish community in Sydney, Australia. At Santana Row in San Jose community members gathered for the first Hanukkah candle lighting. Rabbi Yigal Rosenberg emphasized unity and the menorah's symbolism of light over darkness. San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, the police chief and other city leaders expressed solidarity. A local man said a cousin in Sydney was shocked at the nearby attack. Chabad centers in Santa Clara and Petaluma emphasized continuing traditions, including a hot air balloon gelt drop and an LED-robot-accompanied menorah lighting.
