Hundreds killed in Darfur hospital massacre, 'hero' doctors abducted
"JOHANNESBURG, South Africa For months doctors at the last functioning hospital in the wartorn Sudanese city of el-Fasher performed operations by torchlight, desperately trying to save lives in the most impossible conditions. The Saudi Maternity Hospital was a last refuge for the sick and injured in the besieged city, as fighting raged around them. Despite no electricity, shortages of supplies, and frequently coming under heavy shelling, medical staff kept going."
""On 28 October, six health workers, four doctors, a nurse and a pharmacist, were abducted," from the hospital, the World Health Organization said in a statement Wednesday. "On the same day, more than 460 patients and their companions were reportedly shot and killed in the hospital." WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he was "deeply shocked" and "appalled" by the massacre and called for health facilities, health workers and patients to be protected under international law."
Doctors at the Saudi Maternity Hospital in el-Fasher operated by torchlight amid no electricity, shortages of supplies and frequent shelling. The hospital served as a last refuge as fighting raged around the besieged city. The Rapid Support Forces captured the city and abducted six health workers, including four doctors, a nurse and a pharmacist. Reports indicate more than 460 patients and their companions were shot and killed at the hospital. WHO described the incident as a massacre, said its head was deeply shocked and appalled, and confirmed hundreds of verified attacks on health care with over a thousand deaths since April 2023. Videos purportedly filmed by RSF fighters are circulating online but cannot be independently verified.
