""We are not a protectorate of the United States. Israel is the one that will decide on its security," Netanyahu said in a statement issued by his office as he headed into the meeting."
""We have a very, very tough task ahead of us, which is to disarm Hamas but rebuild Gaza to make life better for the people in Gaza, but also to ensure that Hamas is no longer a threat to our friends in Israel. That's not easy," Vance said."
""There's a lot of work to do, but I feel very optimistic about where we are.""
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Israel will decide its own security and rejected the notion of being a U.S. protectorate while meeting with U.S. Vice President JD Vance. The statement sought to ease concerns that an international security force in Gaza could constrain Israel's ability to strike to prevent future threats. Vance acknowledged significant obstacles to peace, described disarming Hamas and rebuilding Gaza as a very tough task, and said he felt optimistic about progress. Vance met Israeli President Isaac Herzog and relatives of hostages, and was accompanied by U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The Israeli government announced that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will travel to meet Netanyahu on Friday. Uncertainty remains over next steps of the ceasefire plan.
