Nicolás Maduro made his first public appearance since the Nobel award on October 12, attending an event renamed Indigenous Resistance Day while wearing a feathered headdress and carrying an Indigenous weapon. Maduro urged preparedness for peace, called for unity among military, police and people to defeat perceived U.S. imperialism and referenced a U.S. military deployment off Venezuela's coasts. Maduro inaugurated statues of Indigenous heroes and proposed creating Indigenous militias, including international contingents. Maduro avoided naming Maria Corina Machado directly, used insulting language about her and cited a government-aligned poll claiming broad public rejection, while insisting on peace framed by sovereignty and independence.
