Guests, including ambassadors and donors, were forced to take refuge inside."
""If you were planning on travelling to Benin [City] for the MOWAA preview week, please suspend your travel plans," a MOWAA statement posted on Instagram says. Preview events for the multi-million dollar Museum of West African Arts (MOWAA) in Benin City were suspended after roughly 20 men, some armed with wooden bats, stormed the museum courtyard during a pre-opening event, forcing guests including ambassadors and donors to take refuge. A MOWAA Instagram statement advised potential visitors to suspend travel plans. The attack followed protests outside the Edo state legislature. The museum, costing about $25 million, aims to house exhibition spaces, archives and artist residencies and has received funding from Germany, France, Denmark, the British Museum, the Getty Foundation and the Ford Foundation. The project has been politically contentious over the Benin Bronzes.
