President Trump said he would be willing to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during an Asia trip, noting a past positive relationship. The two leaders last met in 2019 in Hanoi. Washington has demanded North Korea give up its nuclear arsenal, while Pyongyang insists the weapons are needed because of threats from the US and its allies. Kim has indicated willingness to meet only if the United States recognizes North Korea as a nuclear state. Trump acknowledged North Korea possesses many nuclear weapons and suggested they are effectively a nuclear power. Seoul’s reunification minister called a meeting between the two leaders "considerable" in likelihood.
