"Following the election, Wine said he had escaped a police and army raid on his house, and that his wife and other family members were under house arrest. Several people were also killed in an attack at a local opposition lawmaker's home in the town of Butambala. The opposition said 10 people were killed by police, while the authorities said seven were killed after people with machetes attacked a police station and vote-counting centre."
Yoweri Museveni, Uganda’s president since 1986, was sworn in for a seventh term in Kampala after winning a landslide January election. The election occurred during a nationwide internet blackout and amid reports of intimidation and abductions targeting the opposition. Museveni received 71.65% of the vote, while opposition leader Bobi Wine received 24.72%, with Wine alleging massive ballot stuffing. Human Rights Watch reported intensified attacks on the National Unity Platform after the election, including mass arrests and the disappearance of two senior leaders. During Wine’s campaign, rallies were interrupted by security forces, supporters were arrested, and at least one person was killed. Wine said he escaped a raid and that his wife and family were under house arrest, while an attack in Butambala resulted in deaths attributed to police by the opposition and to machete attacks on a police station and vote-counting centre by authorities. Museveni has twice changed the constitution to remove term and age limits.
