A father-and-son pair opened fire at Bondi Beach during a "Hanukkah By The Sea" event hosted by the Chabad of Bondi, firing from a bridge into the crowd. The attack killed 15 people, wounded at least 40, and left 27 hospitalized. Police killed the older gunman and took his son into custody. A 43-year-old bystander, Ahmed al Ahmed, tackled and disarmed one of the attackers, was later shot, and is recovering in hospital. Mourners gathered at Bondi Beach to lay flowers at a memorial. The bystander has received widespread praise and recognition for his actions.
