Iran announced Mojtaba Khamenei as the new supreme leader shortly after midnight on March 9, replacing his father Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed on February 28 during US and Israeli military operations. In response to the succession, Iran immediately launched a first wave of missiles and drones targeting Israel and multiple Gulf Arab states including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and Iraq. US President Donald Trump and other American and Israeli officials have publicly suggested the new leader could face the same fate as his predecessor. Trump previously called Mojtaba Khamenei an "unacceptable choice" and a "lightweight," insisting any new Iranian leader must receive Washington's approval. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps pledged immediate support for the new supreme leader.
