A new fund will route millions to the literary arts
""at least""
""not piecemeal. To really say that the literary arts are necessary to our understanding of ourselves as a society.""
""It was something larger, frankly, that we wanted to do,""
""that we hope will outlast the ups and downs of government funding.""
Seven philanthropic foundations formed the Literary Arts Fund to distribute at least $50 million in grants to nonprofit literary organizations over five years. The fund will support fellowships, writers' retreats and residencies, book events, translated-literature publishing, and related activities. The Mellon Foundation initiated the fund; contributors include the Ford, Hawthornden, Lannan, MacArthur, and Poetry foundations plus an anonymous foundation. An open call for grant applications begins November 10. The initiative responds to cuts to the National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences. A study found literary arts received 1.9% of roughly $5 billion in arts grants in 2023. Planners intend the fund to provide sustained support beyond fluctuations in government funding.
