"The Barbican Centre a Brutalist landmark that has housed world-class performances, exhibitions, and cinema since 1982 is heading into a major transformation. After more than four decades of heavy use, the building and its surroundings have begun to show their age. Leaking tiles, outdated infrastructure and a notoriously confusing layout have all contributed to calls for a full-scale overhaul. In response, the centre's management backed by the City of London Corporation has launched the ambitious Barbican Renewal programme. The aim is not just to repair"
"wear and tear, but to reimagine the Barbican for the 21st century. The Barbican's art centre is a cultural institution deeply woven into London's identity That means restoring and revitalising core public spaces, such as the foyers, lakeside terraces, and central conservatory, overhauling mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, and making the entire complex more accessible, sustainable and welcoming for all visitors."
The Barbican Centre will receive a comprehensive Renewal to repair, restore and reimagine the Brutalist complex for the 21st century. The programme will restore foyers, lakeside terraces, the central conservatory and underused areas, upgrade mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, and improve accessibility, sustainability and visitor welcome. The project budget is about £451 million, with £231 million for Phase 1 and an initial £25 million already committed by the City of London. Approximately 80% of Phase 1 funding is covered by the City of London Corporation, with remaining funds to be raised. A design team has been appointed to redesign the visitor experience.
