Mythological creatures parading through our world are not unusual at Halloween. Goblins, werewolves, and zombies prowl for treats with superheroes, princesses, witches, and famous athletes. Mythological creatures have been prevalent throughout music history as well. Prominent composers including Edvard Grieg, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Richard Wagner have musically immortalized gods and goddesses, nymphs and giants, pranksters and folk heroes. The Faustian legend, complete with the Devil himself, has found its way into ballet, opera, symphonic poems, and onto the Broadway stage.
