The remains of a woman who went missing on a swim off Lovers Point were recovered from a remote Santa Cruz County beach over the weekend, her family confirmed. Erica Fox, 55, vanished during a group swim in Pacific Grove during which a shark was reportedly sighted. Just after noon on Dec. 21, multiple eyewitnesses reported that Fox disappeared from the water off Lovers Point in Pacific Grove.

Most mornings, the Blue Boobies arrive in waves at the Albany Beach parking lot. Some days, they start as early as 6 a.m., appearing in the dark, attaching themselves to lit buoys and venturing out, barely visible in the predawn light. Then, another wave around 7 a.m., after the sun's up, and another at 8. This swim group's name is not only a reference to the blue-footed seabird but also the, well, physiological impact of prolonged cold water exposure to female bodies.

While there are plenty of wild swimming spots within an hour's travel of London, it seems like local authorities want more to be done to encourage outdoor recreational swimming closer to home. As it stands, there are just eight safe places to swim in natural bodies of water around London, such as London's Royal Docks and Hampstead Heath. However, none of them are in local rivers amid broader health and safety concerns over water quality.
