The parents of a girl who nearly lost leg while participating in a summer sailing club is suing the club - and counselors - over an incident that occurred days before a barge hit a sailboat full of summer campers off Miami Beach. Bolivar Viteri and Michelle Viteri, the parents of 11-year-old Catherine Viteri, are seeking $10 million in damages, according to a lawsuit filed in Miami-Dade Circuit Court on Monday.

The single-digit-speed collision two years ago required Sharma, a Concord resident, to undergo reconstructive knee surgery that sidelined her from work for 10 months, according to court records, and she's still healing after the accident left her unable to walk or lift the weight of a toddler injuries that ultimately forced the preschool to terminate her job. In addition to what her lawyers estimate is more than $200,000 in past and future medical bills, Sharma's also facing nearly a half-million dollars in lost wages.

She rode Stardust Racers, the intense roller coaster that reaches speeds of 62 mph and ascends 133 feet in the air. In the court filing, Streets' attorneys write that while riding Stardust Racers, her "head shook violently and slammed into her seat's headrest throughout the duration of the ride" and that "as a direct and proximate result, Defendant's Stardust Racers roller coaster caused Plaintiff to sustain permanent injuries." The filing does not specify the nature of her injuries.
